(M)LLC AND FAIRBAIRN & COMPANY CREATE NEW IDENTITY FOR THE RHODE ISLAND PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA & MUSIC SCHOOL

New logo unifies philharmonic orchestra and music school while maintaining their separate missions.

Seekonk, M.A., May 25 (2009) – Mllc, (www.mllc.com) announced today the creation of a new identity for the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School. The new logo, is the collaborative effort of Lee Gorman, president of M llc of Seekonk, M.A. and Jan Fairbairn, principal owner of Fairbairn & Company, South Dartmouth, M.A. The new identity coincides with the orchestra’s addition of the Carter Center for music education and the relocation of its primary offices to East Providence.

Members of the Philharmonic’s board and marketing committee recognized the need to promote the orchestra and music school as one entity while preserving their separate missions. Fairbairn and Gorman created the new identity by combining an ampersand and a treble clef. According to Fairbairn, “The new logo reflects the unity of the individual entities while uniting them in a celebration of the sophistication and professionalism. The placement of the typography keeps it playful and reflects movement, enhancing the overall effect of the identity.”

Karen Pelczarski, President elect, explained that the Philharmonic board had been faced with the challenge of how to promote the two distinct aspects of the organization, while combining them under the Philharmonic’s aegis. “Now that we have our brand new facility in East Providence, it further dictated that we move on this issue. Gorman and Fairbairn’s corporate identity and systematic graphic scheme solved our problem much more than we could have anticipated,” she said. “We are extremely pleased with the result.”

The Rhode Island Philharmonic is the only fully integrated professional orchestra and music school in United States, placing it in the unique position of presenting great music through both performance and music education programs. The Orchestra is now in its 65th Season performing live, symphonic music for the Rhode Island/Southern New England community.

The Philharmonic’s mission has expanded in an effort to combine exceptional symphonic performances with an emphasis on the highest quality music education at the Music School. The School serves approximately 14,500 children, youth and adults with lessons, classes, ensembles and community engagement programs.

Gorman created “M” to help start-up companies and more established firms implement “green practices” in sales and marketing, as well as to encourage “corporate social responsibility practices”. Fairbairn, is a professor of Graphic Design at UMASS Dartmouth and the Rhode Island School of Design, inaugurated her company in 1991.
